The Monthly Mileage: Nov 2018 - A 600Km Month with 2nd Place in a 50 Miler
What is the Monthly Mileage?
This is a series which gives you an insight into my preparation for my world record running attempt in May 2019.
It includes an overview of my running and nutrition stats, plus any major events, like races.
The aim of it is to inspire you to push yourself to your own limits.
In November I came 2nd at the Wendover Woods 50 miler and I had a very heavy month of training.
October 2018’s Monthly Mileage Blog included my win at the Autumn 100 Mile Race.
And you can get a copy of the checklist that I use for FREE. It should help you plan for your own races.
What Were My Running Highlights for November?
In November, my highlight was coming 2nd in the Wendover Woods 50 Mile Race!
You can read my personal race report here.
Despite coming second, which was a great result, my main focus was being in a good enough position at the end of the race to run a marathon the day afterwards.
This would be great back-to-back running preparation if I managed to do it…
And I did!
So it was a very pleasing weekend all round.
Here are some of my key running stats for November:
602km (374 miles) - Total distance
20km (12 miles) - Average distance per day
82km (50miles) - Longest run - Wendover Woods 50 Mile Race
49 hours, 42 minutes - Total time spent running
8,180 metres - Total elevation - The equivalent of Mount Dhaulagiri in Nepal. The 7th highest mountain in the world!
You can track my training by following me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Strava.
How Much Crap Did I Eat in November?
My key food stats for November were:
95,000 total calories eaten - averaging 3,200 per day
111,000 total calories burnt - averaging 3,700 per day
65% of calories from fat, 18% carbs and 17% protein
6,500 calories consumed in a single day - This started as a fairly casual dinner with friends… Which turned into a few glasses of wine… which then turned into me eating bags of crisps and chocolate on the sofa at midnight, whilst watching Derren Brown… Shameful I know… But it was also delightful to gorge for a night :-)
7,100 calories burnt in a single day - The Wendover Woods 50 Mile Race

What’s Coming Up in December?
December is going to be a mixed month.
There’s plenty of big training runs planned. My training plan includes weeks of 210km, 230km, 250km+
But there’s also a huge amount of social activity planned.
Ill be taking tips from this great article from ultra-running god James Stewart - how to sensibly balance a bit of festive cheer whilst training!
First, we‘re off to Bruges for a short family holiday.
So I’ll need to avoid the chocolate, frites and beers.
Then there are the huge amount of work Christmas celebrations. Including a Beauty and The Beast themed party, where I’ll be going as The Beast - insert joke here about me not needing a costume...
Then we have a number of social events with friends, including a wine and cheese night.
And December is topped off with a short trip to Dublin on New Year’s Eve to celebrate Catherine’s (my wife) birthday.
And that will be the last chance for me to enjoy food and drink in excess.
In January my training gets really serious in preparation for my world record attempt in May 2019!
You can follow my progress as I prepare for the event on social media and on Strava.
