See this content in the original post

The aim of the ‘Podcast Review’ series is to save you time by summarising running-related podcasts that I’ve recently listened to.

Which means that you don’t have to waste time searching for them. Or spending time listening to ones that don’t help.

In this episode:

  • Are you over-training?

  • The key to letting nothing stop you

  • The ‘what if’s’ of training - And how to bounce back from them

  • The 2x ‘fittest woman on earth’ Katrin Davidsdottir, talks about her ‘hurdle’ moments

  • The Ironman ‘crawl of fame’ legend Julie Moss talks about the famous race where she crawled to the finish line

You can catch up on the other articles in the series, here.

You can see a full list of the podcasts I listen to, and the books that have inspired me, here.

1) Are You Over-Training? - On The ‘Science of Ultra’ Podcast

What Was it About? - This was another ‘coaches corner’ special where four world-class ultra-running coaches get together to discuss a topic. This time they debated over-training in runners.

Why Did I Enjoy It? - This is always a key topic for me to think about when creating my own training plan.

And it’s one of the biggest talking points I have with athletes that I coach too.

Hearing different viewpoints from these coaches was refreshing. And many countered some of the standard opinions you hear being said time and again.

As usual, there was lots of actionable advice and tips too.

For some complementary reading, I strongly suggest David Roche’s article on long-term sustainable training being the key to progress. It’s a great companion to this episode.

2) The Key to Letting Nothing Stop You - On The ‘Nike Trained’ Podcast

What Was it About? - Saquon Barkley is an American football player who was named rookie of the year and was the second overall draft pick in the NFL.

For those that don’t know much about American sports, like me, that’s pretty good!

He claims that one of the keys to his success is always focusing on ‘being the best’.

And having a positive, open mindset has helped him to get where he is.

In this episode, Saquon talks about goal-setting and how he has handled the transition from college football to professional athlete.

Why Did I Enjoy It? - Hearing from the best athletes in sports other than running is always really powerful and eye-opening. And this was no different.

Hearing about how Saquon uses goals to drive himself forward was insightful. And it was inspiring to hear about how he talks about his approach to training and life.

There were lots of things that we can apply to our own running. Including the power of positive thinking and goal setting.

3) The ‘What If’s’ of Training - On The ‘Running Rogue’ Podcast

What Was it About? - What do you do when things don’t go as well as you’d hoped? For example…

  • What if you have a bad workout?

  • What if you miss a workout or run?

  • What if you go on vacation?

  • What if you get sick?

  • What if you are managing an injury?

In this episode, the coaches give some practical tips and advice about how to bounce back when things don’t go quite right.

Why Did I Enjoy It? - These are some of the key questions that myself, and the athletes that I coach, often struggle with.

Nobody likes to miss a session or have a bad workout.

But it’s how you bounce back from them that makes the difference.

Missing a few sessions during a training cycle almost always doesn’t make any difference to your race-day result.

But doing the wrong things, rushing back into training and making the situation worse, is usually the biggest mistake that any of us makes.

So this episode was a great reminder of some of the basic things you should do to avoid that.

4) Katrin Davidsdottir’s Hurdle Moments - On The ‘Hurdle’ Podcast

What Was it About? - Katrin Davidsdottir is a 2x CrossFit Games champion.

Which means she can call herself the ‘fittest woman in the world’.

In this episode, she tells her story about how she took up CrossFit.

Plus she talks about a number of key moments that shaped the athlete she is now. Including some points that people would have seen as ‘failures', but she looked at in a positive way.

She also talks about how identifying your values are a critical step to success, her eating habits and the psychological tricks she uses to perform at her best.

Why Did I Enjoy It? - Katrin is one of the world’s best in one of the world’s toughest sports. So the insight gained from listening to her perspective on training and psychology is fantastic.

She also comes across as a very humble, nice woman. Despite having achieved so much. Which makes this podcast even easier to listen to.

Again, despite this not being a running-specific podcast, it had lots of things that you can apply to running. And it’s a great story too.

5) The Crawl of Fame and Finding Personal Growth Through Sport - On The ‘Endurance Planet’ Podcast

What Was it About? - Julie Moss is an Ironman triathlon legend. Her 1982 crawl to the finish at the Ironman World Championships made sports history and inspired countless athletes to take up triathlon.

This episode included Julie’s story from the epic 1982 race.

Plus how she has approached training and racing in the 25 years since.

Why Did I Enjoy It? - The video of Julie Moss crawling to the finish line of an Ironman event is one of the most inspiring videos of all-time.

The grit, tenacity and drive that made her crawl to the finish line, when her legs would no longer work, made many people realise just how much the human mind can push past your perceived physical barriers.

I’ve never seen or heard interviews with Julie. So this was an insightful delve into her mentality. And I’ve never heard about what happened to her after that day.

Not only was it a great story to hear again.

But she dives into her approach to endurance sport. Including her weekly training schedules, psychological tips and tricks and how she self-coaches.
