What Was it About? - Mechanical doping or tech breakthrough?
Nike's controversial carbon-plated Vaporfly running shoe has forced us to re-calibrate what performances mean.
The hosts talked through the tech, how it works, why it has had such an impact on marathon performances and what authorities may need to do to regulate running shoe technology.
Why Did I Enjoy It? - First I watched Eliud Kipchoge break the 2 hour barrier for a marathon. And then the next day I saw that the women’s official marathon record had been smashed. Both athletes were wearing the Nike Vaporfly. And so this episode was very timely and gave an interesting and detailed overview of the shoe..
Plus, this was the first episode of a brand new podcast. Which is always a joyful moment!

What Was it About? - This episode covered:
How should you split a long run?
How do they compare to a single, longer run for performance?
Does it prevent injury?
Why Did I Enjoy It? - This is a subject that is particularly relevant to me. Because most of my running is done in two runs per days.
In the weekday morning, I usually run to work.
And in the evening, I run back home.
So, learning more about the benefits of splitting a run into two parts is fascinating. And the techniques and advice can be applied in many ways to your own running.

3) How to Taper Effectively - On ‘The Science of Ultra’ Podcast
What Was it About? - Is there a general formula you can apply to taper properly for an event?
In this episode, four of the best ultra-running coaches in the world discuss their thoughts on tapering.
Why Did I Enjoy It? - I always enjoy these episodes because they have a great debate from some of the best coaches and athletes.
This episode had some very specific, actionable advice on tapering. Including how long to taper for, what type of sessions to do in a taper, and preparing for the race.
Plus they gave some ideas on how else to fill your time during a taper - Great for us ‘type A’ people who need to do something when the training reduces.

4) An interview with Tom Payn, a 12:25 100-Miler and 2:17 Marathoner - On ‘The British Ultra-Running’ Podcast
What Was it About? - On this episode, Dan and James interviewed Tom Payn, winner of the inaugural track 100 mile in an 8th-best British time of 12:25.
Tom has done it all over a running career that has lasted his whole life.
From 800 metres through to 100 miles plus. And he’s represented the UK on the trails and has a marathon PB of 2:17!
Why Did I Enjoy It? - It’s always good to listen to how some of the Britain’s are achieving world-class performances. And this was a fascinating insight into the consistency and dedication required to be at that level.

5) An Overview of the MAF Method - On the ‘Endurance Planet’ Podcast
What Was it About? - On this episode were two legends of endurance sport, Dr. Phil Maffetone, and six-time Ironman World Champion Mark Allen.
Mark had a 15-year professional triathlon career in which he was coached by Phil starting in the 1980s.
Working with Phil led to Mark discover the MAF Method, which he now uses for athletes he coaches.
The MAF philosophy is to gain fitness without destroying yourself.
Why Did I Enjoy It? - The MAF method is what I base a lot of my nutritional approach on. Essentially reducing carbohydrates a lot and increasing fat. But the MAF method actually involves a lot more than just diet.
So it was great to hear more about the background of it. Plus, how it worked for a world-class performer, like Mark, consistently. And for such a long period of time.
